译例选评
胡明亮
１、“有人用武力”
胡适（１９９７）中《我的信仰》一文有这样的话（见该书
２３４页）：
到我次晨回寓，在镜中看出我脸上的血痕，就记起李白饮酒
歌中的这一句：“有人用武力，任出吾身物。”（Some use
might yet be made of this material born in me. 这一句一时也查不
出原文。）
评：括号中是中文译者的注。胡适的英文应该译自李白《将
进酒》的“天生我材必有用”。但别人在把英文译成中文时弄错
了，成为笑话，留在胡适的中文文集里。
２、“电视排行榜”
李敖（１９９９）中《特立独行的美国报人》一文有这样的
话（见该书２８５页）：
就因为这种作对，他（引者注：指Isidor Feinstein
Stone）
得罪了太多的人，使他不是白宫国宴席上的来宾、使他不是名流
俱乐部的会员、使他不是电视排行榜上的要角。（He was never
a guest at a White House state dinner. He didn't belong to the
Gridiron Club. And he wasn't on television panels.）
评：显然，李敖将panel（电视讨论）错译为“电视排行榜”。
３、“知识”
李敖（１９９９）中《真科学家的觉悟》一文有这样的话
（该书２９３页）：
在日本广岛那一颗丢下后，他（引者注：指J. Robert
Oppenheimer）深感痛苦，他说：“科学家已经知道罪恶，这是
他们摆脱不掉的知识。”（The physicists have known sin and
this is a knowledge that they cannot lose.）
评：括号内为李敖所注英文原文。文中的this指“知道罪恶”
这个事实。后边的knowledge仍指“知道罪恶”，译为“知识”，
不如译为“（知道罪恶）这个事实”。全句似乎可以译为“科学
家已经知道罪恶，这个事实是他们无法摆脱的”。
４、“因噎废食”
李敖（１９９９）中《真科学家的觉悟》一文有这样的话
（见２９４页）：
他（评者注：指J. Robert Oppenheimer）说：“世界是不能
对知识因噎废食的。”（The world cannot turn its back on
knowledge.）在知识上，固不能滥用，但也不能开倒车。
评：上文提到核物理家的担心，李敖译为“因噎废食”，说
明不能因为原子弹的破坏而放弃核物理知识。但turn one's back
on是“摆脱或者不理会某事物”的意思，虽然上下文有不能因噎
废食的意思，但这句话本身没有那样的意思，只是说“世界不能
对知识置之不理”。
５、“物资的布局”
单其昌（１９９０，第８４－８５页）：
它还涉及到合法的组织形式、所有权的联合、物资的布局、
设备的设计，涉及到企业产品的分配、基本的调研、雇员名单、
工会组织、与外国政府与外国人民的关系等一系列职能方面的
问题。
It extends to legal organizational forms;
to ownership
affiliations; to the physical location and design of the facilities;
and to the entire functional spectrum ranging from distribution of
products to fundamental research, payrolls, to labor-union
organization, and to relations with foreign governments and people.
评：该书没有给上文，不知“它”指什么。“涉及到”可译
为to deal with, to involve。“物资的布局”译成physical location，
是该译文最大的错误，应是location of materials。另外，“一系
列职能方面的问题”，不仅包括“企业产品的分配......与外国人
民的关系”，而且也包括开头的“合法的组织形式”等。试译如
下：
It involves functions such as legal form of
organization, joint
ownership, location of materials, equipment design, product
distribution, basic research, employee list, labor union, relations
with foreign governments and people, etc.
６、“流域”
单其昌（１９９０，第１２８页）：
最长的河流是长江，它有6 300公里长，有着1 800
000平方
公里的灌溉面积。
The longest river is the Yangtze, which is
6 300 km. long
and drains a basin of over 1 800 000 sq. km.
评：“灌溉”怎么能译成表示“排水”意思的drain？应该译
为irrigates a basin of...。
７、“一手交钱，一手交货”
单其昌（１９９０，第１２９页）：
一提起做贸易来，人们往往会认为这无非是一手交钱一手交
货的事。
When trade is mentioned, people usually think
that trade is a
matter of handing over money with one hand while delivering
goods with the other.
评：该书认为，When trade is mentioned应该去掉。但未指
出“一手交钱一手交货”的英文翻译也容易造成“同一个人又交
钱又交货”的误解。可以译为：People usually think of trade just
as a matter of handing over money by one party and delivering
goods by the other.
８、“能够欣赏的英国读者”
单其昌（１９９０，第１４５页）：
如果把这些事情记在心里，一个能够欣赏的英国读者，比如
说阿诺德·贝内特，也就可以在德莱塞小说中欣赏到类似的见识
了。
Bearing these things in mind, the English
reader who enjoys,
say, Arnold Bennett, will enjoy a similar insight in the novels of
Theodore Dreiser.
评：英文中，enjoys的宾语是Arnold Bennett；say是插入语，
放在动词enjoys和宾语Arnold Bennett之间。但中文给人的印象
是，阿诺德· 贝内特也可能是“一个能够欣赏的英国读者”，
而不是被欣赏的作家。我感觉英文是原文，汉语是译文。汉语可
以译成：考虑到这些因素，那么欣赏比如说阿诺德· 贝内特的
英国读者，也可以在德莱塞的小说中欣赏到类似的见识。
９、“引起”还是“结束”?
单其昌（１９９０，第２１１页）：
The statement capped a day of diplomatic maneuvering.
这个声明引起了一天的外交活动。
评：to cap 是“结束”的意思。可以译为“经过一天的外交
斡旋，发表了这个声明”，或者“该声明是一天外交谈判的结
果”。
１０、谁“笑吟吟的”？
单其昌（１９９０，第２６６页）鲁迅《狂人日记》片段的
翻译：
书上写着这许多字，佃户说了这许多话，却都笑吟吟的睁着
怪眼睛看着我。我也是人，他们想要吃我了！
All these words written in the book, all words
spoken by our
tenant, gazed at me strangely with enigmatic smile. I too a man,
and they want to eat me!
评：关键的问题是谁在“笑吟吟的睁着怪眼睛看着我”，是
“这许多字”，还是“佃户”等人？英文翻译认为是（“吃人”
等）“这许多字”。窃以为，说了话，并且看着“我”的是“佃
户”。后面一句说“他们”要吃“我”了，进一步说明，吃“我”
的是人，而不是字。似乎可以翻译为：
All these words are written in the book and,
although they
have said these words, our tenants gazed at me strangely with an
enigmatic smile. I am also a man, and they want to eat me!
１１、“语调”
单其昌（１９９０，第３４２页）：
应该说，曹先生的寓言之所以有趣、感人，它的成功在某种
程度上靠的是讲故事人的语调。
Mr. Cao's fables, funny and touching in themselves,
are
dependent to some extent, it should be said, on the narrator's
dialect.
评：最后一个词“语调”不是intonation（句子的音调变化），
但也不是dialect（方言）；应该是“讲故事的方式，语气，腔
调”，所以可以译为way of narration或者tone in telling the
stories。另外，“成功”也没有译出。是否可译成：Mr. Cao's
success in making his fables so funny and moving depends to
some extent on his tone in telling the stories.
１２、“南树德堂”
John Byron、Robert Pack所著《The Claws of
the Dragon》
（Simon & Schuster, 1992) 将地名“南树德堂”翻译为Virtuous
Hall of Southern Tree（３７ 页）。
评：著者以为“南”修饰“树”，“德”修饰“堂”，“南
树”修饰“德堂”，所以闹了英文笑话。其实，“树”是动词，
意思是树立、培养，带宾语“德”。“树德”再修饰“堂”，最
后是“南”限定“树德堂”。可翻译为“Southern Hall of Virtue
Cultivation”。
１３、什么时候“就是这样”?
冯庆华（１９９７，４３４－４３５页）这样一段英文（选
自Studs Terkel 所作《Working》）：
In them days, the doorman was ... ohh! You
had to be
dressed nice -- white gloves and a stiff collar. And the white tie
there, even like the waiters use, the head waiter. Nicer uniforms
than this. In the summertime, gray uniform and white gloves,
always gloves. You had to wear hats always. I had a problem one
time with the boss. I didn't want to wear a cap. I don't know
why. I always take it off. He comes by, I put it on. But that's
the way it is.
该教程第３５４页的汉语翻译是这样的：
那时候，看门的是……嗬，全身穿的毕挺：白手套，硬领
子，白领结，就像饭店里的领班服务员用的。穿的制服比这漂亮
多啦。夏天是一身灰制服、白手套（老得戴着手套），还得戴上
帽子。有段时间我还真与老板过不去——我不愿戴帽子 ，也不
知是为啥。我老是脱了帽子。他来了，我就戴上，他一走，我就
脱了，就这么脱呀戴的。可如今就是这样的。
评：英文没有表示“他一走，我就脱了”那句，可能是打字
员漏了。要讨论的是英文的最后一句，But that's the way it is。
本来，译成“就这么脱呀戴的”，就够了。但译者或编者最后又
加了一句“可如今就是这样的”，似乎是画蛇添足。英文的But
that's the way it is，是所谓历史现在时，还是说过去的情况，不
应看见现在时就想当然地译成“可如今就是这样的”。网友“学
而”于２０００年１０月７日在《汉英论坛》说：引文有脱漏，
原文有关部分如下：I didn't want to wear a cap. I don't know
why. I always take it off. He comes by, I put it on. He goes away,
I take if off. Off and on, off and on. But that's the way it is.
(Terkel: Working, p.180)。这样看来，But that's the way it is 不过
是说，“我当时就是这么着 (您别奇怪)。这句是该段落的末句。
１４、“一些时间里”
冯庆华（１９９７）以英国首相撒切尔的讲话为例讲解翻
译，下面的英文和汉语翻译分别见第３５８页和４３８页：
Another more recent example perhaps says someting
more
about the two countries: for some time in 1940 and 1941 Britain
and China were the only two nations actively engaged in the war
against fascism.
另一个较近的例子，也许更多地反映了我们两国的情况：在
１９４０年和１９４１年的一些时间里，英国和中国是积极进行
反法西斯战争的仅有的两个国家。
评：撒切尔说的for some time是指连续的一“段”时间，而
不是若干段时间，也就是从１９４０年６月法国投降到１９４１
年６月德国进攻苏联的那段时间。但汉语的“在一些时间里”可
以指“一段时间”，也可以指不相连的若干段时间，比如说，
１９４０年９月和１１月、１９４１年５月，等等。比如，“在
去年的一些时间里，他学习法语”这句话，可以是连续学了一段
时间，也可以是断断续续学了好几次。原译文又用“和”连接
１９４０年和１９４１年，就更加强了“一些时间”的复数意思。
比如，“在前年和去年的一些时间里，他学习法语”，“连续”
的意思就很少了。所以，汉译改为“在１９４０到１９４１年的那
一段时间里”，可以更明确一些。
１５、“不是像......那样一成不变”
冯庆华（１９９７）所引英语原文（３６２页）和汉译
（４４２页）：
This is a rare and valuable reminder to the
rest of us that the
English language does not stand still any more than our other
institutions. All language changes over a period of time, for reasons
which are imperfectly understood.
这些罕见而有价值的例子提醒我们大家，英语不是像我们生
活中别的固有的东西那样一成不变的。所有语言经过一段时间就
要变，其变化的原因是无法完全搞清楚的。
评：英文 X not A any more than Y，是“X 不比
Y 更A”。
原英文的the English language does not stand still any more than
our other institutions，是说“英语并不比我们生活中别的东西更
能保持原状”，有“别的东西也不能保持原状”的含义。而原汉
译“英语不是像我们生活中的别的固有的东西那样一成不变的”，
则是说英语变，而别的东西不变，所以译错了。最后的which are
imperfectly understood指“没有完全搞清楚”，不是“无法完全
搞清楚”。
１６、“头和靠近头前部的地方”
冯庆华（１９９７）所引英文（４４７页）和汉译（３６７
－３６８页）：
Most varieties of spiders have eight eyes.
These are arranged
on top and near the front of the head, usually in two rows of
four each.
大多数种类的蜘蛛有八只眼睛，长在头和靠近头前部的地
方，一般四只一行，排成两行。
评：又是“和”的问题。on top and near the
front of the
head是指两个部位，还是指一个部位？我觉得，and所连接的两
个短语应该是互相补充说明的关系，就是说，前者先划出大概的
位置“上部”，后者进一步说明“上部”的“靠近头前部”的位
置。原汉译把on top and near the front of the head理解为两个位
置，那样就把“头”的一部分“头前部”跟“头”分开，逻辑上
也不同。可以译为“长在身体顶部靠头前的地方”。
１７、“洛阳的西面”
冯庆华（１９９７）所引汉语（３６９－３７０页）和英译
（４５０页）：
有一天，正对西方的龙嘴突然张开，铜球落了下来。张衡判
断洛阳的西面发生了地震。几天以后，果然得到报告，那一天那
里发生了地震。
One day the mouth of the dragon facing due
west suddenly
opened and the copper ball fell out. Zhang Heng assessed that
there was an earthquake west of Luoyang. A few days later, it was
reported that an earthquake had taken place in Luoyang that day.
评：汉语的“那里”是指“洛阳的西面”，不是“洛阳”。
１８、“那誓词就是美国的目的”
冯庆华（１９９７）所引罗斯福１９４５年１月２０日的就
职演说（３７０－３７１页）和张启梅的汉译（４５１－４５２
页）：
As I stand here today, having taken the solemn
oath of office
in the presence of my fellow countrymen -- in the presence of
our God -- I know that it is America's purpose that we shall not
fail.
我今天站在这儿，在我们同胞面前，在我们上帝面前庄严宣
誓就职----我知道那誓词就是美国的目的，这目的一定会达到。
评：问题出在it的所指上。从理论上讲，it可以回指誓词。但
是那样的话，that we shall not fail就必须是purpose的定语从句，
其中fail以purpose为宾语。但是据美国朋友讲，fail不能以purpose
为宾语。另外，誓词是新总统尽职守法的表示，并不是全国的目
的、宗旨或者决心。所以，应该改译为，“我今天站在这里，在
我们同胞面前、在上帝面前庄严宣誓就职----我深知，美国的意
志就是从胜利走向胜利。”
１９、德语dagegen
安-替发表文章，题目是《德国明镜周刊评论高行健的文章
是这样被歪曲的》（见２０００年１０月１７日《大家论坛》），
文中指出新语丝网站刊登的译自德文的一篇报道有错误。（德文
题目是《Ehrung Xingjians loest Kontroversen aus》，见镜报网站
www.spiegel.de；中文题目为《高行健的荣誉引发争论》。）
德语原文：Der Hamburger Sinologe Bernd Eberstein
sprach
dagegen von einer 'vertretbaren Wahl', die natuerlich auch
politisch motiviert gewesen sei。
新语丝的译文：“汉堡的汉学家BERND EBERSTEIN对于这
个‘值得赞赏的选择’说道：这当然是出于政治动机的”。（见
http://www.xys.org/xys/ebooks/literature/essays/Gao-Xingjian/
gaoxingjian.txt）。
安－替认为：新语丝译者的意思是，“值得赞赏的选择”是
他人说的话，而汉学家Eberstein针对此话进行了批驳。安－替又
说：“值得赞赏的选择”（vertretbare Wahl）正是Eberstein本人
的看法，应该翻译成：“汉堡的汉学家Bernd Eberstein反对上述
说法 ，他认为这是一次合理的、‘值得称赞的选择’，当然，
他认为这里也存在政治动因。”
评：新语丝省略dagegen（意思是“针对（上段中国作协的发
言）”）是不应该的。安－替的纠正基本正确。但原德文只是用
von（有关）这个介词间接地表示“（谈到）某个值得称赞的选
择”，并没有“认为......是”那么明确。
２０、“反登陆”
《陈水扁受明镜周刊专访差点出状况》一文（作者：时报，
见２０００年１０月１９日《世界军事论坛》），转述《中国时
报》的报道，说两位《明镜周刊》记者用英文问陈水扁，“如果
大陆对台发动攻击时，台湾会怎么因应”。陈水扁回答“制空、
制海、反登陆”。英文翻译将“反登陆”译为counterlanding。
因为 counterlanding（反登陆）与 counter-landing（反制登陆）
发音一样，记者误解为“大陆打过来，我们就要以登陆中国回
击”。后来，苏正平跟记者进餐时发现这个误译，立刻向记者解
释。记者觉得不是什么新东西，没有报道价值，就没有把这段登
出来。
评：英文counterlanding是形容词，后边一般有被修饰语，如
counterlanding tactics（反登陆战术）、counterlanding weapon
（反登陆武器）等。而counter-landing是名词，即“以登陆的方
式对付对方的登陆／进攻”，也就是报道中的“反制登陆”。如
果英文翻译把 counterlanding 跟“制空、制海”并列在一起，说
成 air supremacy，sea supremacy，counterlanding，那么，听英文
的人就会认为counter-landing是名词“反制登陆”。由于这段翻
译没有见报，我们无从知晓当时的英文翻译。
２1、“山峰和山谷之间”
冯庆华（１９９７）所引罗斯福１９４５年１月２０日的就
职演说（３７０－３７１页）和张启梅的汉译（４５１－４５２
页）：
The great fact to remember is that the trend
of civilization
itself is forever upward; that a line drawn through the middle of
the peaks and the valleys of the centuries always has an upward
trend.
我们要记住的一个伟大事实是文明本身的趋势永远是上升
的。在若干世纪的山峰和山谷之间划一道线，这条线永远呈上升
的趋势。
评：英语原文是把历史发展看作一条上下波动、有峰有谷的
曲线。要划的那条“线”是穿过波形中间的一条线。译文“之
间”只说明两者间的某点。而且，译文会使人以为是在一个山峰
和一个山谷之间。“中间”的平均值意思更明确一些。可改为
“如果纵贯历史的山峰和峡谷，在发展的曲线中间划一道线”。
２2、“破财”
冯庆华（１９９７）所引John Cheever的《The
Season of
Divorce》（３７６－３７７页）和编者的汉译（４５７页）：
Ethel is cheerful and adaptable, as well as
gentle, and we
both come from that enormous stratum of the middle class that
is distinguished by its ability to recall better times. Lost money
is
so much a part of our lives that I am sometimes reminded of
expatriates, of a group who have adapted themselves energetically
to some alien soil but who are reminded, now and then, of the
escarpments of their native coast.
埃蒂尔不光是性情温柔，而且爽朗随和。我们都来自特别擅
长于怀旧的中产阶级中极大的一个阶层。破财的事在我们生活中
真是司空见惯，这使我有时候会联想到那些客居异域的人，他们
虽说已经很热衷于独处异乡，但还会不时地想到故土海岸的峭壁
悬崖。
评：“破财”是说丢钱、浪费钱，或者被骗、被盗钱财。而
该英文小说的lost money，是说“曾有过的钱财”，比喻移民以
前在故国的富裕日子。上下文所说对故国的怀旧，正好验证这
点。
２3、“桶的顶部”
冯庆华（１９９７）所引英文（３９０页）和编者的汉译
（４７１页）：
It was in the 18th century that the solera
system was
developed; a system whereby interconnecting wooden casks are
stacked in tiers, the young sherries being poured into the casks at
the top and the mature sherries being drawn out of the casks at
the bottom.
在１８世纪人们研制成功了索尔拉制酒法，即在木桶内加隔
层上下相通，刚酿成的雪利酒装在桶的顶部，酿熟的雪利酒从木
桶的底部抽出来。
评：interconnecting wooden casks应该是“互相连通的木
桶”，而不是“木桶内加隔层上下相通”。the casks at the top
和the casks at the bottom应该分别是“上部的木桶”和“底部的
木桶”，而不是“木桶的顶部”和“木桶的底部”。另外，“刚
酿成”跟“酿熟”有什么区别？

consistent final product, year after year. The wine to be bottled is
drawn off the bottom row, the casks are topped off with wine
from the next row, and so on up to the top where the new wine

２4、两种译法，两种理解
同俊子《高行健获诺贝尔奖的正面意义》（见网络杂志《枫
华园》总第二六四期2000年10月20日）说：“瑞典皇家文学院授
奖声明说，高行健把普遍的文学价值、痛苦的内心探索和丰富的
语言表现力结合起来，为中国文学和戏剧创作开辟了新的道路，
还说他有尖锐的洞察，精采语言。什么是‘普遍的文学价值’？
探索人生？没有探索人生的中国作家有多少？”
显然，同一词语bitter insight被不同的译者分别翻译成“痛苦
的内心探索”和“尖锐的洞察”，linguistic ingenuity也被分别翻
译成“丰富的语言表现力”和“精彩语言”。因为汉语译文的意
思的确不同，所以难怪同俊子把它们看作不同的评语。
２５、“升官发财”
吕瑞昌等（１９９３），经过中美专家校对，是一本非常好
的翻译教材。但有几个地方可以商榷，将在本期及以后几期《读
书评译》提出来讨论。第１７７页有一篇故事，说一个县官想把
湖底的金牛献给皇帝，第２３９页是课本提供的参考英译，现摘
抄如下：
县官一听，捧着肚子笑呵呵地说：“这真是一件活宝贝，要
是把它拿来献给皇帝，一定能升官发财！”
When the magistrate heard of it, he held his
sides and
chuckled gleefully, "It's a living treasure! If I present it to the
Emperor, he's certain to heap riches and honours on me!"
评：“升官发财”是先升官，再以权谋私，发财。原英译文
的意思却是皇帝会直接赠给县官财富和权利。The Yeti（见《汉
英论坛》２０００年１０月３１日）建议翻译成：When the
magistrate heard about it, he held his sides and chuckled gleefully,
"It's an awesome treasure! If I present it to the Emperor, I will
certainly receive a lucrative promotion!"
２６、“大狮子”
吕瑞昌等（１９９３）关于卢沟桥的汉语英译（１７７页和
２４０页）：
每个石柱子上有一个大狮子，大狮子的上下左右有好多小狮
子。最小的只有几厘米。它们有的在大狮子的头上、背上；有的
在大狮子的脚下或怀里。
Each column is topped with a big lion surrounded
by many
smaller ones. The smallest is only a few centimeters high. Some of
them stand on the heads or backs of the bigger ones; some lie
under their feet or nestle in their embrace.
评：原文的大狮子每个柱子只有一个，其他的小狮子依偎
的、攀缘的就是这些大狮子。但英文的bigger ones，给人的印象
是，小狮子除了爬那个大狮子以外，还爬别的“比自己大的”狮
子。所以，英文的比较级别bigger倒不如改为简单的big好。
２７、“多三倍多”
吕瑞昌等（１９９３）关于葛州坝的汉语原文（１８４页）
和英译（２４９－２５０页）：
年发电量一百四十三亿度，比１９４９年全国总发电量多三
倍多。
It will generate 14,300 million kilowatt hours
of electricity a
year, more than three times the electricity generated in China in
1949.
评：more than three times可改为over three
times more than。
２８、“主要大街”，“宫门前”
吕瑞昌等（１９９３），１９０页和２５９页：
长安城内街道宽广笔直，主要大街宽度都在一百米以上，宫
门前的一条东西向大街，足有二百二十米之宽。
The streets were straight and wide. The avenues
were over
100 m in width. The one outside the palace, running from east to
west, was fully 220 m wide.
评：原文是说“主要大街”，英译应为major streets。“宫门
前的”，英译应为in front of the palace。
２９、“接着”
吕瑞昌等（１９９３）１９５页和２６４页关于《青春之
歌》片段的的翻译：
从山海关外开进关里的火车忽然一辆辆全装满了哭哭叫叫逃
难的人，靠近北戴河车站的杨庄群众，听说这个情况，已经有点
儿惊奇了；接着又听说日本海军占领了秦皇岛，杨庄村里就沸腾
起来了；......
It was the day when the train coming through
the
Shanhaiguan Pass from beyond the Great Wall brought coachloads
of refugees, weeping and in great distress. The people of
Yangzhuang Village near Beidaihe Station were startled out of
their complacency when they learned that the Japanese navy had
occupied Qinhuangdao on the nearby coast. Yangzhuang Village
was thrown into a ferment.
评：“听说”并使人“有点儿惊奇”的情况是火车运来了很
多难民。使村里“沸腾起来”（即陷入混乱）的是日本海军占领
秦皇岛的消息。但在所引的英文翻译中，日本海军占领秦皇岛的
消息，却被看作“惊奇”的原因。而“这个情况”没有译出。就
是说，“接着”连接的前后（虽然是有关的）两件事，即听说难
民来和听说秦皇岛陷落，被混在一起。
３０、“又”译成but?
吕瑞昌等编著（１９９３）１９８页和２７１页关于《我的
一家》片段的的翻译：

returned to your native town. Then, at least, you won't starve.
评：说话人的意思是，“你”现在年轻，不应该守寡。再加
上孩子，“你”更应该回家乡找个人家改嫁。可是英译者理解的
是：年轻时可以独立抚养孩子，所以把“又”字翻译成but。英
语读者读了，当然不知道原文的含义了。
