COURSE INTRODUCTION (Written by Amy Dooling)
In the first semester of elementary Chinese, you will acquire the basic skills of reading, writing, and speaking
that will provide the foundation of your further study of standard modern Chinese (Mandarin). You will (1) learn
to read and write Pinyin, the standard romanization system for Chinese characters; (2) master the four tones
and standard pronunciation; (3) grasp the fundamental principles of writing traditional (as apposed to simplified)
style Chinese characters; (4) learn to recognize and write approximately 300 characters; (5) thoroughly
understand the basic grammatical rules and patterns of Mandarin; (6) be able to comprehend and engage in
dialogues on simple topics in Chinese.
While the rewards of learning Chinese are immense, so too is the time and effort that must go into this
endeavor, particularly at the initial stages. You must, therefore, be committed to fulfilling the following
requirements:
     1. Attending class every day. This course meets five days a week and you are expected to be in class and on
time every day. In the event of illness or emergencies (which must be explained to the instructor), you will be
excused; all other absences will be counted against your final grade. More than five unexcused absences over the
course of the semester will have a serious negative impact on your grade.
     2. Preparation. Expect to spend at least one hour preparing for each class. Preparation includes completing
homework assignments, practicing characters, memorizing new vocabulary, reading grammar notes from The
Practical Chinese Reader, listening to audio tapes, and viewing language videos.  Note: Investing time in
preparation is crucial not only to your successful performance in class, but will enable you to build a firm
foundation for later stages of Chinese language study.
3.Homework assignments. All homework assignments are due at the beginning of each class. Late assignments
will be marked down.
     4. Language Lab. In addition to regularly listening to tapes as part of your daily preparation, you are expected
to visit the language center for a minimum of one hour per week to listen to tapes. This is mandatory, and
failure to complete this hour will adversely affect your grade. Sign in on the sheet (under Chinese 101) at the
front desk.
     5. Dictations and tests. In addition to daily dictations on new (and old) characters, there will be one test for
approximately every three lessons from PCR. There will also be a comprehensive midterm and final exam (with
both written and oral sessions).
